The eighth grade of Pihlajavesi school travelled to Russia to explore rock drawings in the Belomorsk region and the ancient labyrinths and sacred places of the Kuzovin islands. A four-hour trip over the water concluded at Solovetski Island. The Holy Transfiguration of Our Saviour Jesus Christ was celebrated on the monastic island.
The trip inspired the youths to write poems and conceive and film the animation The Mohikan Wars. The animation’s protagonist finds a role model in a mohawk-hairstyled hunter depicted in rock drawings.
A group of young Russians took a reciprocal trip to Finland during the Lucia festivities. The Belomorsk youths explored the Lucia tradition at Mertala school and spent one evening trying out work on an animation. They put together an animation about a valiant knight who surmounts all barriers in spite of his horse’s hesitancy.
